(Dover, Del.) — A self-employed real estate businessman from Wilmington and his girlfriend have $50,000 reasons to smile, after a POWERBALL® and Power Play® win with the Delaware Lottery.
“I’ve been playing for probably the last 10 years or so,” said the lucky gentleman, 40, who claimed his prize on Dec. 16. “My girlfriend doesn’t say too much – she thinks it’s funny that I don’t watch [TV to get the winning numbers]. I guess I always wondered what it would be like to find out I won in the store!”
In fact he did find out, at a lottery retailer in Claymont, where he stopped to buy a pack of gum and discovered four matching white numbers and the POWERBALL® on a ticket where he had also purchased the Power Play® multiplier.
“This was the first time I won big,” he said. “Usually, I’ll win eight or 20 dollars, but I said to the clerk, ‘I think I won a big prize’ – so I checked once again, and then I left so quickly I forgot the gum.”
Telling his long-term girlfriend – and soon-to-be fiancée - about his good fortune, the winner wasn’t sure he wanted to tell anyone else.
“We’ve been ring shopping together,” he said, with a laugh. “I may have to go with a bigger ring now!” And despite not wanting to tell anyone else, “I told three people last night.”
Going with the flow has proven to be fortunate for the gentleman, who purchased his winning ticket via the Quick Pick method at Hares Corner Shell along N. DuPont Highway in New Castle on Dec. 10, for that evening’s drawing.
“I play POWERBALL® consistently, but sometimes I’ll play HOT LOTTO® and MEGA MILLIONS® when the jackpot is high,” he remarked. “Everyone says it, but you have to play to win!”

But her Quick Pick numbers were seriously lucky – and after calling to tell her dad of her good fortune, the first-time winner settled into the new reality.
“This will give me security for a little bit,” she noted. “I have no idea what to buy (with the winnings).” Claiming her prize at Delaware Lottery Headquarters on Nov. 28, she did make plans to return, noting that she’ll continue to play the lottery – and most likely, the MULTI-WIN LOTTO: Her new favorite game.

(Dover, Del.) — Christopher Daley, a 45-year-old married father of two from Wilmington scored himself a $10,000 POWERBALL® jackpot on Aug. 30, courtesy of the Delaware Lottery.
“This makes me feel a little luckier,” said Daley, a first-time winner who purchased his ticket on Aug. 24 at TJ’s Food Mart, 1700 Marsh Road in Wilmington for that evening’s drawing. “I normally play when the jackpot is around $40 million or higher.”
Recognizing his win by checking the numbers on his cell phone early in the morning, Daley couldn’t wait to share his good fortune. “I woke my wife up at ten of five,” he remembered. “She has happy that I woke her up for a good reason!”
The manufacturing plant worker also joked as he told of his own early morning realization that he had, indeed, won.
“I had bought $20 worth of tickets – Quick Picks, in this case – and usually check which (match) the POWERBALL® first,” he said. “I had two that did, so I checked those lines – one had three matching numbers, and I was a little happy, then I saw it had four, and I didn’t know what I’d do if the last one was right.”
Planning on paying bills first with the winnings, and after noting that he would “absolutely” play again, Daley said what all big winners do.
“We’re going to Disney!” he exclaimed.

(Dover, Del.) — A 68-year-old state worker – and frequent lottery player - from Claymont finally hit the big time on Aug. 22, as she claimed her $40,000 instant game top prize from the Delaware Lottery. The winning Triple Platinum 777 ticket was purchased at Naamans Beverage Mart, 109 Naamans Road in Claymont, about a week prior to being claimed.
The winner mentioned to Lottery officials that when she started playing the Lottery, she began with $1 instant tickets and gradually switched to $10 instant tickets “because I always won something.” Not trusting her extremely good fortune in this case, she asked the store clerk for verification – “and even he did a double take,” she laughed.
“I kept the ticket for about six days,” she noted, but now that the winnings are official, she plans on paying off debt.

(Dover, Del.) — A union carpenter and his wife, a retired postal worker, both from Seaford, Delaware, have a new life – and perhaps their cat has one less – as a result of their $49,000 win, playing DELAWARE CASH 5®.
“I always call the 800 number to check,” said the very happy wife. “I jot the numbers down, but this time, I had to look back and forth before becoming excited – and at that point, the cat took off from me in a hurry!”
Purchased at Shore Stop, 522 W. Stein Highway in Seaford for the Aug. 9 drawing, the winning line was part of a $5 ticket that included NASCAR numbers and birthdays of family members, as chosen by the players.
“We’ve done it the same for nearly thirty years,” agreed the husband. “We each pick two sets of numbers. Of course, we won with the (one) Quick Pick!”
While thrilled, the wife was quick to note that her husband was not the first recipient of the good news.
“I couldn’t reach him at his job,” she explained. “So I called my mother, and said ‘You need to talk to me right now or I’m going to pass out.’”
With a laugh, her mother told her to call 911 – but holding off on that impulse, she finally reached her husband during his break at work.
“You’re kidding me!” was his happy reply.
Both agree that the prize money, which was claimed Aug. 11, will change their lives, citing economic conditions that have lowered the demand for carpentry work.
“We’ll first pay off the bills,” said the wife. “If we have enough left and we feel that we can get away, we’ll book a trip to Jamaica.”
After thirty years, though, why rest on one’s laurels?
“Saturday is the next drawing,” said the wife. “I’ll be buying our tickets tomorrow!”

(Dover, Del.) — While many may love New York, the Delaware Lottery is feeling it back from the Empire State’s 33 year-old Amber Cook, the newest $10,000 instant game top prizewinner.
Cook, an account analyst from Sidney, NY, struck it rich during an impromptu restroom stop at Hare’s Corner Shell, 102 North DuPont Highway in New Castle.
“I was travelling with my fiancé and daughter – just passing through,” she explained, noting that she’s an occasional lottery player in her home state, but that this was the first time she had decided to play in the First State.
Her purchase of two instant game tickets proved fortuitous, as a $10,000 Payout win was in her hands – a prize she claimed on July 13.
“I thought it was a joke,” she said. But her disbelief turned to happiness upon telling her fiancé, and then to careful planning.
“I’m going to pay my bills and try to be responsible,” Cook laughed, deadpanning that there’s a “very high chance” she might play the Delaware Lottery again.

“We normally play every week,” said the woman. “Usually we play POWERBALL® and MEGA MILLIONS®,” her husband added. “But this is the largest amount we’ve won except for a few $150 prizes…it’s a big jump!”
The couple said that they usually have a set of lucky numbers that they play on other Lottery games, but this time the random pick numbers did the trick. They don’t have any specific plans for the money, but it may come in handy for an upcoming trip.
“We’re going to Florida soon,” said the woman. “So maybe we’ll use some of the money for that.” Other than that they plan to put the money in the bank.
The winning ticket was drawn on July 6th, and purchased the same day at Cochran Liquors, 560 W. Main St in Middletown.

(Dover, Del.) — A 48-year-old Millsboro wife and mother is one step closer to being debt-free after depositing a $10,000 POWERBALL® prize, courtesy of the Delaware Lottery.
“I generally play twice a week,” said the Delaware native, a bank employee in a nearby town. “Usually just $2 – one each on POWERBALL® and MEGA MILLIONS®. But this is the first time I’ve ever really won!”
Checking her ticket at a Quick Check scanner, the woman realized that her purchase at Shore Stop, Route 24 and Route 279 in Lewes, for the July 6 drawing, was indeed, going to fatten her wallet.
“I told my husband first,” she said. Making plans with him to pay off a loan, she claimed the ticket at Lottery Headquarters on July 11.
While not saying it would change her life – “No, it’ll just lower my debt,” she laughed – she looks forward to playing again, and cashing in, with the Delaware Lottery.

“I scratched it off right in the store and had to take a second look,” she said, happily. “I couldn’t believe it had that many zeros; I had the retailer look at it to make sure it said what it said!”
Recognizing her good fortune, the player was quick to share the information with her husband, and made plans to “pay off all bills.” She remains practical, however.
“No way,” she replied, when asked if it would change her life. Remaining consistent, though, also involves remaining true to her favorite $5 instant tickets from the Delaware Lottery.
“Yes, I sure will (play again),” she smiled.

(Dover, Del.) — A Fairfax, Va., man who won a $4.8 million slot machine jackpot at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino on May 15 claimed his prize yesterday, May 31, at Delaware Lottery headquarters. Bert Dickerson scored a whopping $4,856,978.35 on the multistate progressive game Ca$hola at exactly 1:26 a.m. on the morning of May 15.
“I had already been playing for three and a half hours and I was getting tired and ready to leave the casino when I found a $20 voucher card in my pocket,” the winner recalled. “I moved to an end machine because I’ve always heard the chances of winning were better there. Before I knew it the lights and sirens were going off. I thought I had broken the machine at first”
Luckily for Dickerson, the machine was working perfectly. “I realized what was happening when the security staff came over and a crowd started gathering around to congratulate me.”
The giant progressive-slots jackpot accounts for the largest single video lottery payout in Delaware history. The prize also marked the final Ca$hola jackpot, as the multistate game concluded its five-year run by paying out more than $52 million in annuity jackpot prizes.
Dickerson, who immediately received a check for $10,000 on May 15, has opted for the lump sum cash payout of $2,927,899 (as opposed to the 30-year annuity option).
“I’ve been meeting with a good financial advisor and I feel secure with my decision. I plan to give some of the winnings back to the community, and I’d like to use this money as a way to finance the rest of my life. I hope to tap only the accrued interest and leave the principal untouched for as long as possible.”
The 45-year-old said he visits the Dover Downs Casino every other week while visiting his parents in the Dover area. “I go to the casino because I enjoy talking to local folks and seeing some of the local color. It’s an outlet and an escape for me. Compared to the area I’m from it feels like a new country.”
Dickerson, a recruiter for a defense firm, said he refuses to let this win alter his life in any major way.
“The win won’t change me at all. I will continue working for sure, because I think people get into trouble when they walk away from who they are and what they’ve been doing. I may start my own business in the future, but I’m a pretty simple guy.”
Three of the largest four jackpots at Dover Downs have been on Ca$hola machines. A Laurel, Md., man won a $1,034,191 jackpot in July, 2008, and a Dover woman won $318,760 in July, 2007.
Ca$hola was initiated in July 2006 as the first multistate, progressive video lottery game to be offered in the U.S., and has been featured at all three casinos in Delaware, as well as casinos in Rhode Island and West Virginia. Sunday’s jackpot at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino is the 37th Grand Prize to be won on a Ca$hola and the second largest to hit since its inception nearly five years ago.

“Even if I hadn’t won I would be playing again next year,” said the winner. “I enjoyed playing so much and I don’t know how anyone who likes sports wouldn’t want to get involved with a game this fun. Even if I finished out of the money I would have had a smile on my face after the final week.”
A social worker who splits his time between Wilmington and Rehoboth, Durnan learned about the competition from friends who frequent the state’s racinos. Players were required to pick six games each week against the spread through all 17 weeks of the pro football season and had to submit their picks in advance to the sports books at Dover Downs, Delaware Park or Harrington Raceway. There was a one-time entry fee of $250 at any one of the three Casino Sports Books.
“I occasionally play the numbers, but I’m more into sports betting,” said the Durnan. “I knew there was a lot of parity in the league this season, so I just took it week by week and probably spent 20 hours a week analyzing the games before making my picks.”
The winner said his willingness to take a chance on some less hyped teams was key. “Every pick I made was a close call, but I bet on the underdogs more than most and relied on my gut for a lot of tough games. I guess I was lucky they came through.”
Durnan was somewhat surprised to learn he’d won because he was second overall in the standings entering the last week. The anxiety kept him pacing until the final standings were released. Durnan went 5-1 in the last week while the former leader went 3-3, allowing Durnan to edge ahead and win by one game.”
The smooth-picking player says he will use the money to pay off some bills and is setting some aside for his retirement fund.
Cash prizes were also awarded to players finishing through fifth place, and top players at various stages throughout the season earned $5,000 prizes. Cash prizes totaling $100,000 were awarded. Durnan claimed his prize from the Lottery’s Dover headquarters Jan. 7.
