First Annual Lottery Week Kicks Off July 15th
Dover, DE (July 15, 2019) — In collaboration with lotteries across North America, the Delaware Lottery is proud to announce the inaugural annual observance of Lottery Week beginning July 15th.
Lottery Week is a celebration of the contributions that lotteries throughout the United States and Canada are able to provide the communities they serve.
As much as 96 percent of funds generated from traditional U.S. lottery games goes directly back into the economy through prizes, public beneficiaries and retailer commissions. While individual jurisdictions vary, the average lottery returns 63 percent in prizes to players, 27 percent to public beneficiaries and 6 percent to retailers. The remainder supports lottery operations, providing employment opportunities and other benefits. Lottery proceeds fund different programs according to each jurisdiction’s guidelines and are dedicated to a variety of important causes including education, environmental conservation, elderly care, tourism, economic development and more.
In fiscal year 2018 alone, U.S. lotteries generated $23.4 billion for those good causes and transferred $4.8 billion to their retailer partners.
Additionally, lottery organizations and their partners often participate in supporting local causes by organizing events such as food drives and community cleanups.
Lotteries also partner with responsible gambling groups to educate their retailers and consumers, to encourage safe, responsible play. And, of course, they provide a fun, exciting source of entertainment for all their players – not to mention a big payout for the lucky winners.
The goal of Lottery Week is to highlight the positive impacts that lotteries have on their communities every year.
“Lottery Week is a great opportunity to recognize and raise awareness of the many contributions that Delaware Lottery players have helped make possible,” said Vernon Kirk, Director of the Delaware Lottery. “We pride ourselves in being an active and involved part of the community.”
