GEORGETOWN FAMILY WINS $1 MILLION POWERBALL
PRIZE
Dover, DE - A Georgetown family received the surprise of a lifetime during breakfast on a recent Sunday morning. The lucky family, who wishes to remain anonymous, won $1 million from the previous night's POWERBALL® POWER PLAY® drawing, held Saturday, May 15. The fortunate family stepped forward to claim their prize Monday, May 17.
The good news came when the family's 21-year-old daughter and her boyfriend checked the family's Powerball tickets while their parents were cooking breakfast. They quickly realized one of their tickets matched the first five winning numbers. The family knew they had won something significant but weren't sure of the exact amount. "We were doing back flips," after discovering the prize was $1 million dollars, they said.
"It is always a pleasure to award prizes like this to Delaware Lottery players who are genuinely appreciative and excited by major prizes," said Wayne Lemons, Delaware Lottery Director. "It's wonderful they turned what would have been a $200,000 prize into $1 million by opting for the Power Play option."
The family plays the Delaware Lottery regularly and is originally from Maryland but has lived in the First State for ten years now. They realized late that evening they hadn't yet purchased tickets for the big May 15 drawing.
"We ran to the local store at 8:30 pm because we realized we forgot to buy tickets for that night's drawing," the family said. They are extremely thankful they made that last minute trip. The family plans to take a vacation, pay bills and invest a portion of their $1 million winnings. The 21-year-old daughter is also angling for a car.
The family's winning numbers came courtesy of Quick Pick and the ticket was purchased at the Dash-In on Dupont Highway in Georgetown.
While this family just missed the jackpot, they also narrowly came up short on an additional $1 million. The Powerball Power Play 10X promotion is back and running through May, allowing players to multiply their non-jackpot prizes up to ten times. The Power Play feature normally allows players the chance to multiply their non-jackpot Powerball winnings 2, 3, 4 or 5 times for an additional $1 wager.
Starting with the drawing on Saturday, May 1, one of the number 5X multipliers has been replaced with a 10X. If the 10X is selected, the non-jackpot base prizes won for that drawing will be multiplied ten times for players who also purchased the Power Play. The 10X multiplier will stay in play through the Powerball drawing on Saturday, May 29, 2010.
