June 28, 2007Newark Woman Scores $10,000 Powerball Prize
Dover, DE --A 53-year-old Newark woman recently became the latest Powerball winner, courtesy of the Delaware Lottery, as she scored $10,000 from the June 6, 2007 drawing. The woman, who works for an insurance company in Wilmington, said she plays regularly, but when she found out that she had won she couldn't believe it.
"When I checked my ticket at the store, all I saw were a lot of zeros," she said. "The only thing that I could think was, 'Oh Lord!' I couldn't believe it. I was still smiling and shaking two days later."
She added that she didn't have any big plans for her new-found riches, but said she is lucky in that she doesn't have any big bills or debt to pay off. She noted that she'll probably invest a little and just enjoy the rest.
"I've been playing the lottery in Delaware every week since it started up, and I'm just going to have fun with it," said the woman, who is a widowed mother with two teenagers. "Maybe I'll give them some spending money, but believe me; they get enough from me already," she joked.
The winning ticket was purchased at Miller Smoke Shop on Market Street in Wilmington.
Since the start of operations in 1975, the Delaware Lottery has contributed more than $2.5 billion to the state's General Fund to help finance needed state services that benefit everyone in Delaware.
