2005 Press Releases
December 09, 2005FIRST OF TWO $200,000 POWERBALL® PRIZES IN ONE WEEK IS CLAIMED
Dover, DE -- A 55-year-old man
from Bear claimed his $200,000 prize yesterday from the Saturday,
December 3, 2005 POWERBALL® drawing. After learning of
his win two days ago, the regular Lottery player went to the
Delaware Lottery Office in Dover to have his ticket validated
and claim his prize. This winner is the second to win the
$200,000 Match 5 prize in the past week, though the prize
from the November 30th drawing has not yet been claimed. He
was one of eight Match 5 winners nationwide, and one of 6,529
winners in the State for the December 3rd POWERBALL® drawing.
A check for $150,000 was awarded to the winner which represents
his $200,000 prize minus federal taxes.
The winner, who wishes to remain anonymous, is a Philadelphia
native who moved to the area four years ago. He is married
with children and a young grandchild, and plans to tell his
family about the win at a family birthday party this weekend.
At the time he claimed his prize the only person to know of
his win was his wife. Though he told Lottery officials he
has only won $80 in the past, he plays POWERBALL® every
drawing at his usual Retailer and will continue to do so until
he really "hits it big." The winner purchased his
winning ticket from D&H Liquors in New Castle. When he
stopped into the Retailer two days ago and learned a winning
ticket was sold, the Retailer clerk checked the tickets and
shouted out the good news. He admits to having a stash of
tickets that have not been checked, and plans to start checking
them more frequently now that he's won. The winner plans to
remodel his kitchen for his wife with a portion of his winnings.
Since the start of operations in 1975, the Delaware Lottery
