May 22, 2002NEWARK MAN CLAIMS $100,000 POWERBALL® PRIZE
DOVER, DE - A 38-year-old Newark man
claimed the second $100,000 POWERBALL® prize from the May
15, 2002 drawing Monday afternoon (May 20) at the Delaware Lottery
Office in Dover. The winner, a historical services contractor
who wishes to remain anonymous, was awarded $73,000. This figure
represents his $100,000 prize minus $27,000 for federal tax.
The winner, a regular POWERBALL® player, purchased his winning
POWERBALL® ticket at Genuardi's Family Market in People's
Plaza in Glasgow the day before the drawing (May 14). His Quick
Pick ticket matched five of six winning numbers.
"I found out I won when I called the Player Information number
the day after the drawing," he explained. "I've won
small amounts in the past, but when I realized I had won a $100,000
prize I broke out in a cold sweat. It's a strange, but very exciting
feeling."
Currently, the winner plans to pay some bills with his prize money.
He also said he will continue playing Delaware Lottery Games in
the future.
The POWERBALL® jackpot for tonight has an estimated annuity
value of $12 million. Tickets for POWERBALL® cost $1 and are
available at more than 400 Delaware Lottery Retailers.
Since the start of operations in 1975, the Delaware Lottery has
