FIVE WOMEN CLAIM $100,000 POWERBALL® PRIZE FOR THE APRIL 12 DRAWING

DOVER, Del. A $100,000 POWERBALL® prize for the Wednesday, April 12, drawing was claimed yesterday afternoon, Monday, April 17, at the Delaware Lottery office in Dover by five women from Middletown who wish to remain anonymous.  The five women were awarded $14,400 each, which represents a one-fifth share of the $100,000 prize minus $28,000 for federal tax.

The winning ticket was purchased Wednesday, April 12, 2000, the day of the drawing at Minquadale Liquors in New Castle.

When the women were asked what they plan to do with the prize money, some said, "pay off bills."   Others said they would use the money for vacations.   And another woman said, "I will use the money for my daughter's braces."  One woman who held the ticket for the group realized they had won when she checked the winning numbers in the paper and called the other women to let them know they had won.   "I thought it was a joke," she said.

"I couldn't believe it, I was so excited!"   The five women won on a Quick Pick ticket.

The five women said they have played POWERBALL® together for years.  When asked if they plan to continue playing Lottery games, they all replied, "You bet we will!"

The jackpot for the Wednesday, April 19, 2000, POWERBALL® drawing has an estimated annuity value of $80 million, which has a cash option worth $42,700,000.  POWERBALL® tickets cost $1 and are available at all Delaware Lottery On-line Retailers.
