NEWARK MAN CLAIMS JANUARY 4 $2.275 MILLION ALL CASH LOTTO JACKPOT PRIZE

 DOVER, Del. - A 76-year-old man from Newark, accompanied by his 73-year-oldwife, claimed the January 4 All Cash Lotto jackpot prize of $2,275,000 this morning at the Delaware Lottery Office in Dover.

He was awarded $1,638,000, which represents his $2,275,000 prize minus $637,000 for federal tax.

The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, purchased his All Cash Lotto ticket the day of the drawing at Brookside News in the Brookside Shopping Center in Newark. The winning ticket was a Quick Pick ticket with numbers selected randomly by the Lottery computer terminal.

The man, who is now retired after working for General Motors for 37 years, told Lottery officials that he and his wife found out they had won when she checked the numbers in the News Journal this morning. He said, "The excitement has yet to sink in. My wife is amazed that we actually won."

When asked how he would spend the prize money, the man replied, "I'm not sure, but we will spend it the best we can." The man and his wife, who have a son and a daughter, told Lottery officials that they are regular Lottery players. "I don't think I'm out of luck yet, so I will continue playing Delaware Lottery games," he said. "I'm trying for the POWERBALL® jackpot this time!"

According to Delaware Lottery Director Wayne Lemons, the Tuesday, January 4 jackpot is the third largest Lotto jackpot won since the game started in 1983. The largest Lotto jackpot, worth $3 million, was won in February 1993; and the second largest, worth $2.9 million, was won in January 1993. The January 4, 2000 All Cash Lotto is the fourth Lotto jackpot worth more than $2 million to be awarded by the Delaware Lottery. Lemons commented, "It's such a wonderful way for this couple to start off the new year. They certainly have a lot to look forward to this year."

Since the game started, there have been a total of 16 Lotto jackpots paid to a single player that was worth more than a million dollars. Tickets for All Cash Lotto cost $1 and are available at all Delaware Lottery On-Line Retailers. Tomorrow's (January 6) All Cash Lotto jackpot is worth $150,000.
