POWERBALL® REACHES $400 MILLION
Dover, DE - August 5, 2013 - Wednesday night’s estimated annuity jackpot reaches $400 million and if won on a single ticket, a cash value of $230.3 million will be awarded. The jackpot rolled from $300 to $400 million after no grand prizewinner was named in the drawing that took place Saturday, August 3. The winning numbers for Saturday were 21, 24, 36, 42, 45 and a POWERBALL of 15.
The next drawing will take place Wednesday, August 7 at 10:59 PM. The Delaware Lottery encourages responsible play among players when jackpots reach significant amounts and reminds players that the odds of winning a jackpot prize are 1-in-175 million.
“Bigger jackpots mean more excitement, but also the more reason to keep responsible play in mind when purchasing tickets,” said Lottery Director Vernon Kirk. “It’s always a fun time to play when jackpots are at their highest, but players should set limits and make financial responsibility a first priority.”
In May of this year, POWERBALL reached a record-breaking $590.5 million, beating its previous highest jackpot of $587 million won on November 28, 2012. The $590.5 million jackpot was the largest single-winning POWERBALL jackpot, which was claimed in June by an 84-year-old woman from Florida. She chose the lump-sum cash payment of nearly $371 million rather than the 30-year annuity option.
Under POWERBALL’s new and enhanced prize structure, more than 663 players have become millionaires by winning at the second prize level. On the average, over nine millionaires have been made each week since the game was changed in January 2012, according to the Delaware Lottery.
“Delaware has been very fortunate to have had so many big winners this year, particularly POWERBALL winners,” said Director Vernon Kirk. “With the upcoming drawing on Wednesday, we hope to keep the momentum of luck going.”
In what can be considered a memorable Memorial Day Weekend, one lucky Delawarean purchased one of three winning tickets to split a $50 million estimated annuity jackpot that was drawn May 25, 2013, making this individual the ninth jackpot winner overall in the First State. The winning ticket was purchased at Super G supermarket in Rehoboth Beach, DE.
POWERBALL jackpots start at $40 million and roll until the jackpot is won. Players win by matching the five white ball numbers (1-59) and the red Powerball number (1-35). There are eight other ways to win non-jackpot prizes ranging from $4 to $1 million or up to $2 million if the ticket includes POWER PLAY. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are approximately 1 in 31. The odds of winning a jackpot prize are 1-in-175 million.
